1. How to Tighten a Bicycle Chain on a Single-Gear Bike
A single-gear bike has a cog in place of a freewheel in the back wheel. To tighten a bike chain on this type of bike, follow these steps:
- Flip over your bike and set it on a bike stand to easily access the components. Apply a bit of lubricant to the chain.
- Put on a pair of gloves and use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the nuts on the rear axle. Rotate the nuts carefully to the left. Remember righty tight-y, lefty, loosey.
- Pull back slowly on the back tire to increase the tension in the chain until it feels tight enough. You should be able to shift the bike chain about half an inch in either direction.
- Keep the tire in the center of the wishbone so you can easily tighten it back.
- Lift and tighten back the rear tire into its original position. Replace the nuts of the axle using the socket wrench. Make sure that all the nuts are sufficiently tight. The tire should be securely attached back to the bike frame and must not touch the frame or chain.
- Test the tire and chain by moving the chain both ways. You should be able to move it by half an inch in either direction. Rotate the tire several times to confirm that it is moving smoothly throughout. Make sure it does not touch the frame or chain while rotating.

2. How to Tighten a Bicycle Chain on a Multi-Gear Bike
A loose bike chain on a fixie is not as dangerous as it is an annoyance. However, a loose chain on a bike with multiple gears can lead to serious injury if it latches onto your feet.
If you find that your multi-gear bike has a detached chain, fix it immediately by following the steps below:
- Turn the bike over and place it on a bike stand. This will help you reach the derailleur and tire easily. Put on a pair of gloves and apply a thin layer of chain lube.
- Look for the screw at the rear of the derailleur. Turn it to the right to increase the tension on the bike chain and tighten it.
